Breve descrição: The edge computing paradigm aims at overcoming existing shortcomings of the cloud computing model, particularly on its inability to process large volumes of data generated by users (or users devices) in a timely fashion. The key idea of edge computing, is to complement the cloud model by pushing some components/computations/services to the edge of the system.

In this thesis we plan to build support for this, through the exploration of self-organising (overlay) networks that can be operated at the edge and provide abstractions to enable the construction (on top of them) of useful services and abstractions for edge computing. This work will explore two complementary venues: i) supporting storage systems in the edge through DHTs that are location aware; and ii) support large-scale data dissemination in a way that is independent of the underlying network infrastructure.
Observações: The work is contextualised in the European project LightKone and FC&T project NG-STORAGE.

It is expected that the thesis will contribute with: i) solution design; ii) prototype implementation; and iii) extensive experimental validation.
